Custom Lapis Gem Stone Ring.

If you had to find a mineral named Lapis, you will find none. Blue Lapis is a combination of minerals and not one single mineral. The predominant mineral in Lapis is Lazurite but calcite and pyrite are also present in smaller proportion in the stone. Talking about Sodalite and Lapis, the predominant Lazurite component of blue lapis belongs to the same mineral family as Sodalite. So while there is a relationship between Sodalite and Blue Lapis they are not the same gem stone.

Blue lapis is a stone that has applications in the jewelry industry. At one time it was also used to produce the color pigment in paints for getting the utramarine blue color shade. Historic records also mention that blue lapis was powdered and used to make cosmetics. Since the gem is not very expensive and can be found in large masses, it is also a popular material used to create carvings and sculptures.

Coming back to the minerals that present themselves in lapis, pyrite appears as tiny specks in the stone. These specks can be seen by the naked eye. Clacite occurence in blue lapis could be scattered or could appear more like white patches. Surprisingly many lapis jewelry buyers prefer to have blue lapis in a uniformly dark blue form, this without any calcite or pyrite visibility. This unfortunately is not the form in which blue lapis can be found. Gemstone manufactures are keen to please this large group of buyers and therefore resort to dying of the blue lapis gem.

As a gem lapis is neither very expensive nor very hard. It is most often set in lapis silver jewelry and lapis pendants because of their lower degree of wear and tear are better than lapis rings.
