Wedding Band Pairs, Choosing Band Width

When talking about wedding band pairs, it is necessary to understand the real meaning of the word 'pairs'. Many jewelers are of the opinion that the two rings that form a pair of wedding bands should be identical in all respects. Some confusion can be cleared by using the term 'similar' as opposed to 'identical'. A pair of wedding bands relates to a set of wedding bands where the design concept for both the rings remains the same. The emphasis is on design concept, size, dimensions and even gemstone need not be the same.

For example if you wanted to get a pair of ruby wedding band rings, the men's and lady's wedding bands could be designed as shown in RG131 above. However as is generally the case, the lady's ruby wedding band would have a smaller ring size as compared to the men's ring. This is because you could expect that ladies have thinner fingers as compared to men.

Another difference in a pair of wedding bands would relate to the band width. For example, ladies wedding bands are normally in the range of 5mm to 7mm. Similarly men's wedding bands are generally preferred with an 8mm to 10mm band width. This seems fine since though the rings would be a pair of wedding bands, the wedding band worn by the lady could be a little more feminine, a little petite too.

Having talked about the band width, the next feature follows and that is the gem stone size. With a smaller band width, the lady's gem stone wedding band would probably have a 5mm to 6mm gemstone. A man's wedding band would have a gemstone in the 8mm to 10mm range. It is necessary to understand that the cost of the gemstone selected will also influence the possible band width. Technically you could make a pair of ruby or blue sapphire wedding band rings with a band width of 10mm but, do not expect to get 10mm square blue sapphires at a modest price. These gems are expensive and limiting the size to 7mm or 8mm squares is a good idea. An 8mm square blue sapphire would itself be quite expensive and also cost a lot.

One rather interesting issue finds it's way into the equation for band width of wedding bands. This relates to the choice of the metal for the rings. We strongly recommend that the metal weight of a jewel be proportional to the size and dimensions of the piece. If this does not happen, you end up with an under weight jewel that can bend and deform easily. But what if you want a solid gold 10mm means wedding band in size 12. Nothing wrong with that but, the ring would need a hefty gold weight of around 25 to 30 grams. This will show on the price tag and could possible be beyond your budget. You would have 2 options here, choose the more affordable option for wedding band rings in sterling silver or, moderate the band width of the gold wedding band to around 7mm or 8mm.

It is true that silver and gold are both doing the upward price march in recent years. However silver is a lot more affordable than gold, this works to your advantage. You could get impressive wedding bands in 925 sterling silver with good weight, craftsmanship and gemstones. Fine a good custom jewelry provider and ensure that all your preferences are met.

The above brief story explains how a number of issues need to be collectively considered before deciding on band width for a pair of wedding band rings.
